Need to Design a low cost (both machine and disposable daily filter set/consumables), extremely light weight, battery operated dialysis machine to enable daily dialysis that could be performed while the user is “on the go”.

Solution Delivered

  • Modified new filtering media/systems to further reduce size, weight and cost for daily use
  • Develop intuitive user interface
  • Develop new, low cost sensors for items such as bubble detection, flow stop, etc. to guarantee user safety without training
  • Had to design fail-safe operation


  • Reduced disposable costs relative to Portable Artificial Kidney system by over 50%
  • Daily disposable kit well below cost targets – economically feasible/profitable product with standard industry reimbursement rates
  • Common bubble detection, flow shut-off and advanced blood cartridge developed based on Portable Artificial Kidney technology
  • Final system size of medium “purse”, capable of 3 hours untethered battery operation
