Mobile IoT Amends User Experience

August 18th, 2016

The footprint of the digital age is being increased all the time and this enables new wave of life-enhancing services. One of the evolutions is Internet of Things (IoT) rather Mobile IoT, which offers intelligently-connected devices and systems that leverage data and make more contextualized, specific and timely decisions.

The main requirement for Mobile IoT is the connectivity with the mobile devices moving around from one location to another. Mobile IoT is all about connecting and interacting with smart devices to accomplish a specified task, deliver additional information, functionality, value or user behaviour back to the organizations.

Rise of IoT – Why today?

Until a few years back the only devices accessing the Internet were PCs and laptops but this has changed a lot in the last couple of years. The era of smartphones and smart devices have changed the way online services are consumed and interact with the world.

Here is a reflection on some of the key developments which lead to the rise of the IoT today.

  1. The mobile revolution
  2. The rise of internet APIs (Salesforce, eBay and Amazon, followed by Social Media, Facebook and Twitter, EC2, AWS, etc.)
  3. The precipitous fall in cost of components and data services
  4. The rise of the community – the IoT Meetup group has grown rapidly in the short time
  5. The combination of security, mobile, cloud, big data and IoT

IoT Today is the world’s leading media brand discussion of the Internet of Things. In the past few years especially, the breadth of connected devices in the market has increased exponentially. More than millions of new things are connected every day however there are problems like security & privacy, interoperability and user-friendly designs for adoption of IoT and the world is moving at a very fast pace towards that.

How mobile IoT solutions change the end-user experience?

The IoT didn’t usher in the era of “experience as the product” using UI, but certainly it has some attention to it. The relationship between the various other touch points have grown stronger. There is a demand for organizations and brands to leverage IoT that simplifies the user experience in ways that has not been experienced before.

The Internet of Things is changing the way brands create experiences and relate to the end users. Brands are increasingly faced with the challenge of the ways users interact with the connected devices. These products are extensively networked, closely integrated and provide a much engaging experience. Mobility has become a way for enterprises to run their business and enable their employees and customers to be always connected using services (IoT).

The customer can set fastest route to home while driving, offering to stop in a grocery store, and suggesting some fruits to boost vitamin C intake. A suggestion for a massage session that perfectly fits into the schedule and adjusted for travel time appears when customer’s level of stress increases. It is an excellent experience, the psychological aspect, the experience of ease and pleasure that decides the failure or success in technology. Internet of Things, and in fact most other consumer tech, will fail without an outstanding user experience.

Mobile IoT Technology: Beacon – Simple but Effective

Bluetooth Smart Technology (also known as Bluetooth Low Energy) is used to transmit data from the devices. Most of the beacon devices use BLE technology because of device footprint, reduced power needs and low manufacturing costs. The technology allows restricted amount of data to be transmitted which is why most beacons only transmit their IDs. The Beacon IDs consists of a maximum of three values:

  1. A universally unique identifier (UUID)
  2. A major value (optional)
  3. A minor value (optional)

Besides these three values, every beacon device can also configure and transmit its signal strength. This information is used by the app for calculating the location the beacon devices.

Beacons – Working

A Beacon is a small, low energy bluetooth device that continuously transmits a radio signal with its UUID in a defined distance range and this signal is picked up by the smartphone application. When the mobile device detects the beacons signal, it reads the beacon’s UUID and calculates the distance to the beacon and triggers an action in the mobile app.

Beacons – Usecases

Beacons are simple devices but are technically advanced. They allow indoor positioning (GPS cannot provide this) and indoor behavior tracking. The device interaction with the app doesn’t consume a lot of battery. Beacon as a technology does not have many standards to be followed like the other IoT applications.

  • Retail: Retail is currently one of the areas in which beacon technology is being implemented extensively since the beacon devices offer a new way of in-store interaction between customers and retailers.
  • Sport Venues: A cluster of beacons can be used to help visitors find their seats and send them notifications about various promotions in the stadium.
  • Airports: Beacons can be used to send specific notifications to passengers.
    Examples include:
Specific Offers – Notifications about specific airline partner services
Indoor Navigation – Micro-navigating services, leading passengers to their gates, etc.
  • Public transport: Using Indoor Location, we can create way finder App.

Apart from the above example,s the beacons also have lot of success stories in many other industries. The Beacons are simplest example for IoT, except this some other IoT application include Wearable devices used in Healthcare industries which helps to get accurate data of patient’s health information in right time.

Mobile IoT as a technology area has every ingredient required to support smart homes, smart cities, smart healthcare, etc.
